The Silverton Northern (like many of the railroads in the mountains of
Colorado) was narrow-gauge. The only standard-gauge railroad to go all the way
from the Plains though the Rockies is/was the Denver & Rio Grande Western (south
from Denver to Pueblo, then west through the Royal Gorge ((built out from
the canyon wall hanging from support rods)) then north through Leadville and
Tunneling Under Tennessee Pass to get to the Colorado ((formerly called Grand))
River Valley, then west to Grand Junction.) Later, the D&RGW routed from
Denver through the Moffatt Tunnel to Granby on the Colorado River then
connecting to the southern route to go west to Grand Junction and Salt Lake City.
