Well the Mobil Economy run had an average speed requirement of over 42 mph 
and ran for 2400 miles before Interstates. That a Tempest could get better 
gas mileage says to me that the Corvair had to work hard to keep up.

Other factors:
  Bias ply vs radial tires
  Stock tuning (?)
  No electronic ignitions
  No synthetic lubricants

But suspect the course was a major factor.
