<VV> Still Steering After All These Years

(apologies to Paul Simon)

I have yet to figure out what the weird noise in my steering is. I was
really convinced it was in the steering box, but I'm not so sure now.
The more I think about it....

The click-snap sound is MUCH louder IN the car than under the car. To
me, it sounds like it's coming from in the steering wheel hub. I had
convinced myself it was in the box, and the sound was coming up the
shaft into the car and that's why I heard it, but it sounds like it's
right in the steering wheel. Is there anything in there that can
'catch" creating a "click-snap-boing" sort of sound? I see in the
manual there's a spring in there..what's it doing and can it get funky?

The sound/catch feeling dosen't seem to happen in any specific place in
the steering position..it can be at the end of a hard left....at the
very beginning of a wide right, etc...I could easily be convinced a
spring or something is catching and as i turn it frees itself with a
loud snapping/clicking sound.

I think ih eard it in the box..sound coming from up the shaft, rather
than the other way 'round. The car continues to steer fine..but my
paranoia about it makes me sometimes think it's loose or
something..till I realize I'm driving in a 35 mph crosswind!

I'm thinking I'll pull the steering wheel and have a look in there. I
hate to get messing with removing/replacing the box if it's not
necessary.
