Simply put......the ignition of the fuel happens so far ahead of TDC  that 
the ensuing explosion slows the piston as it tries to reach TDC...but 
compression is so low that it doesn't "kickback"...

Try it!   just keep twisting the distributor until it "bucks"      This 
happens ALL  the time in any engine with ignition timing Before TDC....just not as 
pronounced!

so...an engine with 4 deg. BTDC  initial vs. 16 BTDC...will always turn over 
with less cranking amps...during a start attempt.
