Aircraft magnetos are set up to retard the timing so the darn engine
could be turned over. Once it started, the timing returned to regular.
Even my ancient Minneapolis Moline farm tractor had a retarded magneto,
you could hear it click as you cranked, that way you don't break your
arm/wrist if it fired in reverse.

Getting all the information is most of the solution.
