Check your oil level. If you have too much oil (or a mixture of oil and
gas), the crankshaft will beat air into the oil. This air gets pumped into
the lifters, which then collapse (fully or partially) and produce the
clatter you're hearing.
     This excess of oil (or whatever) also drains into your combustion
chambers via the valve guides when the engine isn't running and produces the
smoke you're noting on startup.
     Get your oil level down to its minimum on the dipstick and make sure
there's no gasoline in it.
