Keep in mind that the object is peak cyl pressure at the "sweet spot" 10-15 
degrees after top dead center. How much advance you need is a function of 
octane (higher burns slower) and vacuum (higher burns slower). Lots of 
other things such as chamber geometry also but those two are major 
contributers.

One thing for sure, gas octane is lower than when premium was 98 (research) 
octane so modern gas will burn faster/need less advance than the factory 
manual says. Unless the additives make it burn slower... Anyone know the 
relative rates ?
