Ron,

That clunk, clunk sound once per wheel revolution sounds a lot like the sound my first car (1969 Opel Rallye) made when I took the wheels off to refresh the silver paint and forgot to fully tighten the lug nuts on one wheel. After about 10 miles of driving with the noise getting worse and worse, I pulled into a service station (remember those?) and the mechanic on duty (remember those?) put it up on the lift and discovered the problem: loose lug nuts. I was so embarrassed. It was a humbling experience for a 19 year old who knew he knew everything there was to know. I've never forgotten it.

If the bearing could be tightened up "one hole", then perhaps it was loose enough to wobble and cause that clunk, clunk sound. At least that's my guess...

<snip> When we tried the left front, there was a distinct plunk, plunk, but lighter in pitch as there was no load on the wheel. We removed the wheel but not the drum and there was no sound. Tightened the bearing one hole and still no sound. Replaced the wheel and still no sound! </snip>
