 My friend has an unmolested original low mileage AirVair. I doubt the car
has ever been touched. I'll check with him tonight and post his response (if
any). I once had a low mileage original '65 and it was definitely toward the
driver.
 
However, as with any production item if it could be put together more than
one way it was!!

Jim,

Most of the ones I have are angled towards the passenger. However, I DO
have one that is angled towards the driver, and looks like it has never
been apart. So my guess is that while it could be done either way, it
probably was intended to be towards the passenger.

It would be a good question for a survey.
