If you look at the reference in How to Keep Your Corvair Alive, you'll find
that Finch doesn't mention Viton o-rings.  With the original o-ring
material, heat was a major problem.  With Viton, the problem is pretty much
solved.

Finch's entire scheme here included painting the exhaust tubes and putting a
.020" aluminum shield between the exhaust and pushrod tubes.  All of this
will certainly reduce the radiated heat transfer to the tubes, making the
o-ring run cooler.  Whether that matters to sealing and life with Viton
o-rings is arguable.

There's also the question of whether this lowers oil temperatures.  I
haven't seen any data that convinces me that heating of the oil in the
pushrod tubes is a significant contributer to oil temperature, but I've
painted the tubes for the 3.6L motor just because it might help.
