My mother passed away a year ago in just such a manner. She was at a
Rainbow (for Girls, a Masonic organization, which she loved) meeting and
at the end of the meeting (I was also there) I suddenly looked over and
she was on the floor. We kept her with us until the doctors at the ER
were able to assess her conditon, at which point we just let her slip
away because that's what she would have wanted.

Just two weeks ago, dad passed away suddenly while getting ready for
church. From all signs, he was dead before he hit the floor. At least
both went quickly. Like you point out, hell on the relatives, but a
wonderful way to check out. Certainly better than lying in a nursing
home for almost 2 years like my mother's mother did. That's something
that terrified my mother, and rightfully so.

We should all be so lucky, as the joke goes, to go peacefully in our
sleep like dad did, and not screaming like his passengers. (At least I
still have some sense of humor left about life.)
