I didn't put in the relay right away either.  No problem for months, then I 
ran the HI Output motor on high for less than an hour continuously.   The 
higher current (lower speeds draw less current) overheated the individual connector 
in the connector block and melted things down.  I'd put in the relay first 
chance you get.
