At least on the LM, the shift coupler has rubber cast between the  shaft/pin 
and the tube. Unless the rubber has failed - a bunch - the pin  shouldn't 
contact the tube. Of course, for racing, I weld the tube to the pin on  both sides 
- causing a great ground path. (And lots of smoke, during the weld!)  -Seth
