Well,

It is a 14 gallon tank.  Gas it up when it is resting solidly on E.  See how 
many gallons it takes.  It is pretty typical on Corvair for 4 gallons to be 
left.  In other words, it is only going to take about 10 gallons to fill it.

The other trick, when on E, turn a couple of corners and/or sway the car 
from side to side.  See if the needle moves or not.  If it moves, there is 
still SOME gas in the tank.  If it does not move, find a station SOON.

Some folks seem to think that E stands for Enough!  <GRIN>
