I used to feel the same way. After all who is the injured party (until you
want to sell the car, that is)? But as I said in my explanation of the third
car that I couldn't get titled (the conv. being "restored" by the son who had
abandoned it at the dealership) the law doesn't necessarily work that way. As
our cars (and we) become more valuable good intentions and good conscience may
not prevent us from being lumped with the grifters of the world. I didn't
mention that on the first car I saved (also a '65 Conv.) DMV said I had to have
a bill of sale from the business where the car had been abandoned. I had it
from the company who owned the property, but the DMV clerk looked up the
address and said that the business that was LEASING the space had to provide the
bill of sale. Back to them and they tried to intimidate me into paying them
$1,000.00. I stood my ground and showed them their landlord's BOS and after a
week they signed off. But at every stage of the game someone can play hardball
with you.

I personally think everyone who saves a Corvair deserves
recognition--something like the hard luck award--but most of us are old enough now that society
expects us to be prudent in our business dealings. Of course if we were prudent
we probably would have gone with the urban legends of the '60's and '70's and
never kept our Corvairs. And then there never would have been the
"Fellowship of the Vair" and the world would be worse off.
