Ron,it sounds a lot like a valve problem,at worst a broken guide;;;wrong rocker arm,from another engine,will push the valve stem sideways and break the guide;;a plugged pushrod that's not oiling the rocker,a bent one that's rubbing on the guide plate (or a backwards guideplate),a bad rocker/ball,,also look in pushrod tube for a piece of debris,and possibly a bent rocker stud...slip a 90* elbow on the Y-pipe,run the muffler out sideways;;;then pull the valve cover off,take BOTH #1 rockers off,and start the engine...make sure all of the keepers are holding the valve stem at the retainer,causing the spring to 'cock',or lodging itself elsewhere...a broken inner damper spring is harder to detect....Tom Z/had ALL of the above problems..
