Hummmm. Doesn't sound right. The idle vent valve should be open at an idle, 
so if you were getting air in there it shouldn't have been a bad rubber valve 
since air would always enter at an idle when the valve was working correctly.  
Also, as I remember, that idle vent circuit does NOT enter into the air flow, 
so even if you removed the vent, it shouldn't allow air to enter the airflow 
going to the engine. It's a vent to the carb bowl. I don't have a carb here to 
check but I think that I'm correct.
