Charlie,
Classic signs of true vapor lock. There are only a few fixes possible. 
Electic fuel pump is the best and most effective. Next is a 1/8" fuel return line to 
the tank. Possibly a change in gasoline might help. Some people have had luck 
with drilling a small (~.030") hole inside the mech pump to relieve pressure 
on the carb side.
