<VV> Holes in trunk

Hello,
In an early model, in the trunk, just behind the headlights, why is there a
round hole on the passenger side and a smaller oval hole on the drivers
side. I feel that the hole is there to tighten the nuts of the belt line
trim.  My question is why is one bigger and different in size to the other?
