I believe that's the key...and along with voltage drops with increase in 
RPM..and several things have "temporarily"  helped it...

How is the ALT. wired?  1 wire style?  If not..where is the Voltage sensing 
lead connected?  As I recall.....internal regulated ALTs  have the 2 SPADE 
terms  INLINE  with the backplane of the ALT. casing?.....the one wire is for 
excite / idiot light.....the other was usually a 14-12 ga.   and was the voltage 
sensing circuit...

I believe as things heat up....the sensing lead sees lower voltage....causing 
the 
ALT  to try to put out 70 amps...belt slips.....soon you're dead!
