Padgett, The pointy end is a fulcrum for placing springs in various 
positions on the
backing plate etc. Theoretically the spring easily slides down the shoulder 
onto whatever
you have placed the pointed end next to ...........like next to the anchor 
pin. Like you,I use a vice grip
instead.
