Not scientific proof (just annecdotal),  but my car made just that kind of noise right before it broke a rocker arm.  I thought it was a lifter but it wasn't.  It's not a difficult fix though.

I just finished waxing the car for this week. Started it up and a loud tack,
tack, tack sound is now coming out of the passenger side of the engine.
