<VV> motor oil shelf life - general, not corvair specific

Cleaning out Dad's garage.  Found buncha quarts of Valvoline 10W40 - old 
enough to be in round card-board like containers with gray plastic bottoms.  
Any opinions on whether this is OK to use?
