<VV> Looking for a Small Oil Leak

Steve, I'm going to vote for the top cover gasket. I would do the other
things you are talking about because if one of them is the culprit you'll
save yourself some work, but doing the top cover isn't all that difficult.
You will need to remove the top shroud, which will also mean pulling the
carbs, but you can disconnect the fuel line at the fuel pump and pull them
off as an assembly with the linkage intact. Pop a WD 40 cap in each of the
carb ports in the head to prevent any foreign objects from falling in. With
the carbs removed you can remove the top cover bolts. I detailed removal
and replacement of the top cover at

http://www.wittelaw.com/personal/tinkering/part%203.htm.

You'll end up with a sore back, but you can "ideally" tackle this in an
evening or two.

Norm

P.S. Good to hear from you!

Subject: <VV> Looking for a Small Oil Leak

VVers:

I have a small oil leak coming from somewhere on the top of the block on
my '66/140. It isn't a big leak, but because of it's location, it does
a pretty good job of dripping onto the fanbelt and then getting picked
up and sprayed all around the engine compartment.

The problem I have is it doesn't leak fast enough for me to be able to
pinpoint the source with certainty, so I thought I would log on and ask
everyone for a few common areas to investigate.

Right now, it looks to me like it's coming from the oil pressure switch
and I've ordered a replacement. When I replace the switch, I'm also
going to change the oil filters and gaskets, so if those are causing the
trouble, I should get those then, too. I'm pretty sure it's not coming
from the dipstick or filler cap, because both of those look pretty clean.

Are there any other areas I should look?

Thanks in advance.

Steven "looking for a good place to take this leak" Serenska
