So did British Vauxhalls until around 1969 - and they also had a 3-speed 
when it was on the column only (4 when it was on the floor).

By then it was an incredibly archaic thing to have in Britain (Ford had 
stopped in 1962, and the Brit manufacturers never offered 3 on the tree), 
and it always caused a lot of mirth on the part of road testers.

I wonder if anyone actually *ordered* a car like that...? I would love to 
find one now...
