<VV> Rough Running

This one really has me stumped. I did the carbs -
twice - tripple clean on very good cores, new Clark's
kits, checked the throttle plate seal, new stone
filters, new choke pull-offs and vaccuum lines.
First time, it seemed to have a vaccuum leak on pass
side (a drip every now and then, at idle). I replaced
that carb bowl and the insulator - problem went away.
Tuend it up and it great. Jim drove it and it was
terrible - racing at idle, then no power in gear.
Several local gurus came over and tuned it, as I had
tuned it when it was about 30 degrees outside. Seemed
to be a choke adjustment issue. Also added lower
shrouds and thermostats, which had been missing.
It has run well after each dose of attention from
several sources, but then seems to fall apart. It
seems to develop a vaccuum leak that allows it to
flood.
Some off the wall things to consider... a hole in the
balance tube? I replaced the rubber hoses on the
balance tube. Bad modulator? I checked the rubber
vaccuum modulator lines and they felt/looked fine. The
vac. advance tested fine.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Reminds
me of Funky's problem on Fast Vair with the '63. Just
when you think you might know what you're doing with
one of these cars...one comes along that just leaves
you dumb-founded.
