I'm sure not a carb guru - maybe Grant can speak more precisely on this - 
but at least SOME versions of our carbs are vented.  I believe that the 
purpose of the vent is to allow gasoline vapors to escape in an attempt to 
reduce hard starting/vapor lock? within the carbs themselves.  So, if the 
car sits for a while (a few days?) the gas in the bowls can evaporate out of 
those vents.

Attachments (if any) are scanned with anti-virus software.
