Padgett,
If you read about Sir Harry's experiments with water injection in the
same book, you'll see he has a very informative graph that clearly
demonstrates how using water injection can allow you to significantly increase BMEP
(AVERAGE cylinder pressure that makes torque) WITHOUT increasing PEAK cylinder
pressure that breaks things. If you don't want to spring for the big $$ for the
newly available reprint of Sir Harry's book, you can find the same graph in
Hugh MacInnes' much cheaper book "Turbochargers" in his chapter on Water
Injection.
Correctly applied water injection can also enable you to run your
Corvair on regular gas without pinging/knocking since it reduces that PEAK
cylinder pressure without decreasing average pressure (BMEP).
