<VV> Was: Battery vent caps, now corrosion

So, all ye experts... Most Corvairs on the road for the last 30 years or so  
have had no vent caps, EM or LM so... Why do EM cars corrode above the battery 
 on the underside of the quarter panel, while LM cars typically corrode below 
the  battery in the inner quarter panel.  I've never seen an LM car with  
corrosion above the battery.  What's up with that?
 
Also, I have seen C3 Corvettes with battery vent caps just like the ones  
that were on Corvairs except that the caps were wider, apparently to accommodate  
a larger battery.
