Along with what Bob H.  told you......Check the Brown wire from the harness 
connector to the regulator....bet there's less than 6-7  volts there.....not 
enough to excite the regulator...

The smoke up front..may have damaged the harness up front..

A "quick"  bandaid  is to jumper the Brown to the Ign.  cir. wire [ cloth 
covered]    but no tattletale light then...
