 which makes me wonder if the "salt" we think we smell in most coastal areas
is just the odor of decaying organic matter from rivers.

"It's called the smell of the sea, actually it's the smell of land....the
sum of all the things that crawl or are carried to the water's edge to die
and decompose.  To a sailor it's a welcoming odor that means home, family,
friends, and happy memories.....otherwise, it's something to be eradicated
with Lysol!"
