I'm suprised Jon didn't set you straight on weight savings.......ggggg.......FRONT needs MORE weight.....REAR needs lightening!///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
We talked extensively about weight savings, and more importantly about weight distribution.
I agree that the rear needs lightening, which will get looked at and done also. I plan on mounting the battery as far forward as possible (maybe in front of the torsion beam, space permitting). Again, paying close attention to weight distribution....

You're obviously using a VW Beetle pan? Drill the Torsion housing......it's heavy....../////////
Again, I've thought about it, and will drill it to get some weight out of it also, but it still has to handle the upper coil over shock loads. Instead of the torsion bars, the torsion housing will house (and provide mounting for) the anti-sway bar. It also has to handle the torque loads from the engine and trans.

Use a 0.060" sheet aluminum cut to sandwich between the bellhousing /
Engine to support it....no rear mounting!/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I'm going to cage the transmission with a front trans mount and a forward end/trans mount plate. I'll connect the two plates with 1x2 4130 rectangular tubing and mount the control arm pivots to these "stringers". Therefore, the motor /trans plates need to be made fron 4130 also.

Are you IRS or SwingAXLE? Either way.....swingplates /Control arms can be drilled..////////////
I'm building my own IRS, based upon VW parts....again 4130 steel tubing...

Car should be fun! Everyone I know that's built one has enjoyed it....
