In the case of the 10DN Delcotron there were basically two armatures and 
two stators and depending on how they were mixed or matched produced the 
four different amperages: 37, 42, 55, and 63 amps. Dredging a bit now the 
42 and 63 amp versions produced less at idle than the 37 and 55 but peaked 
higher and were used on higher rpm applications (mostly Corvette).

Also keep in mind that if any process changed or a hole changed diameter or 
even if the location of the part number changed, this resulted in a new 
part number for the assembly.

The Delcotron was an extremely successful unit in use for ten model years 
(until replaced by the internal regulator 10SI) not just by GM but also 
many commercial truck and marine uses plus Studebaker and American Motors.
