A passport is a very good suggestion, if you have one. But be sure as 
minimum have picture ID for all people in your party, and bring birth 
certificates, especially for minor children. You certainly wouldn't want to 
be in Canada and refused re-entry into the US because you cannot provide ID 
for a child. And be stuck there until you can get someone to bring it to 
you.
You are coming to Buffalo with the Canadian Border a walk away. There are 
plenty of sights to see on the Canadian side, and the Canadian side actually 
provides a much better view of the Falls. You've come this far, be prepared.
