Back from trip and was able to run a few more tests - engine warmed up,
chokes open
Stock 1966 110/PG

900 rpm smooth stable idle in N
Carbs balanced with Unisyn
Advance stable at 8 degrees (vac line off)
Vacuum tested on both choke pulloff ports: 13-14 " - 1500 rpm 18" stable
Figured out how to put scope in parade mode (thanks guys) and ignition
pulses look very even

Put in "D" with brake set hard
Idle drops to 400-500 rpm
Vacuum reading 10-12" and shaking
Advance is very stable at 8 degrees BTDC
Note: timing light stops blinking below 400 rpm
Idle slowly degrades, rattles at 300 rpm, puffs a bit from breather, and dies.

Sounds like D is putting more drag on engine than should. Advance throttle
slightly so idle in D is 600 rpm and idle is stable but car is squatting a
bit. Same throttle position gives 1100-1200 rpm in N.

Again once moving everything seems fine, shifts seem right, and
acceleration, while not speedy, is enough to easily stay with traffic. Full
throttle winds easily to shift point (about 42 mph - has 3.55)

Checked trans fluid and looks new, no sign of foaming, & with no odd or
burnt odors.

One person mentioned a dragging overrun clutch in the torque converter and
said there was a VV archive that discussed it but I could not find, only
overflows. Anyone know the citation ? Was also a mention of testing the
clutch on the bench.
