My $0.02

Corvair cams and the bottoms of lifters really don't wear very much because
they are running in oil if the oil level is kept at the full mark. So if
you need to replace a lifter because it won't pump up or what ever, you can
usually get a way with it. Unfortunately not changing oil on a regular
basis is the cause of a lot of lifter problems. In my observations, people
who don't change their oil on a regular basis are the same people who don't
necessary keep the level between full and add a quart so if you don't know
the history of the engine you could have a sticking lifter caused by not
changing the oil often enough combined with a lot of miles a couple of
quarts low. For $4 a lifter, it's worth changing out, but the cam lobe and
lifter may wear out quickly.
