<VV> Station Wagon Heater Assembly Removal

Has anyone managed to remove the complete heater and blower assembly from the top on a station wagon after removing the top cover?  On first pull, it looks like it still won't clear and that the motor and fan assembly will need to be removed first, and that won't be easy.  Per the shop manual, they say that step one is to remove the engine assembly and that seems like a bit much to get at the heater but it must be necessary on all of the sedans and coupes.
