<VV> 1966 140 Valve Adjust and Reseal

I am resealing the engine on my 1966 140. There are several different 
methods that I have read about.

Is there a certain order that I should follow when removing the push rod 
guides? Do I need to loosen the top bolts on the heads? What should I 
retorque the guide nuts to?

I have read that there are two ways to adjust the valves - running and not 
running. It seems that it would be easier to adjust them not running. Any 
tips / advice on the technique to use?
