<VV> pinion loose on shaft

I have been overhauling my differential (1965 Monza coupe 4 speed), and 
tonight I noticed that the pinion gear is loose on the pinion shaft.  I'd 
say there's about .005" play, both side to side and in and out.  I'm 
assuming that this is not normal.  Is this a common problem?  Easy to fix? 
Well, I've discovered that any problem can be fixed easily with enough 
money!  Is this one of those problems?
