No I don't think toothpaste is a good idea.  I've used toothpaste to hand
lap trumpet pistons and saxophone neck tenons.  

Anhydrous lanolin would work well.  It's thick and sticky.  Crisco might
work too. Why use lapping compound to stick needle bearing in place?

Maybe you were joking ;-)

I always just used Vasoline or wheel bearing grease. Suppose in a pinch you 
could use toothpaste.
