Padgett (and all),
There is more to this than just what you said.
 
For the Ignitor I, (that's a I) Pertronix offers and sells two different  
40KV coils. One for 4-6 cyl cars and one for 8 cyl cars. So if you are using  
their coil, you need to keep the ballast resistor in the circuit if you use the  
8 cyl coil, which has a primary resistance of 1.35 ohms. But if you use the 
coil  for 4-6 cyl engines, then you should remove the ballast resistor from the  
circuit, since it has a pri res of 3.0 ohms. 
 
If you keep the stock Corvair coil, then you want to keep the ballast res  in 
the circuit.
