  Hi Dan:

The valves were adjusted while the car was running (about a year ago).
In fact, if anything, I believe I set them at an additional 1/4 turn after
  the knocking stopped. (loose).

I'll check the wire from distributor going to coil. The coil itself
is fine...I placed it in my 65 to see if I could duplicate the issue.
  It ran with no problems.

  Tony

  Valves too tight?

Distributor wire breaking down where it goes into the distributor?

Coil breaking down or wrong? I put a brand new chrome coil on mine
and had the same thing happen, it was either bad or was wrong voltage
or wan't grounded correctly inside. I threw the old one back on and it
peped right back up.

Just a few ideas to check out.

Anyone want to buy a shiney chrome coil used just 30 miles! still
in the brand new box on the shelf in my garage. Looks real good!
Cheap!
