Dennis, thanks for being willing to follow up on this. I talked to a lot of guys at the Car Display side of the field, and most of them would not do concours because of the undercarraige inspection. I think the chassis judging is an excellent thing. There are people who bring their cars to amazing levels of detail, and it's unfair to that level of effort not to make it part of the evaluation. But I think the gulf between the car display and concours is a bit too wide. Either you have to be a professional competitor and be judged by their standards, or you are left by the wayside.

There are lots of good reasons for keeping the status quo, not the least of which is the issue of manpower. I know that it's difficult to get judges for the concours as it is. However, I think one of the goals of the concours/car display should be to encourage people to compete at the highest level possible. It's good to strive for quality. At the same time, another goal is to keep things fun because, after all, this is a hobby. (Ok, it's an obssession, but that's a discussion for another day). Having said all of that, a level of judged competition that is a little less intimidating might attract more cars to the concours. And one people have tested the waters, well, what's a few hours on the creeper between the jackstands?

That's why I like the idea of having the driver division be identical to the concours with the undercarraige points treated as a full deduct for every car in the category. If you compete and do well in this class, you may get gold, but you won't be able to say you have a 98 pt. car. You do have the privilege of knowing that within the parameters of the event you were competitive, though. The other nice thing about this is that judging would be a breeze because it would be part of the concours.

I'm not enamored too much with breaking up the car display and the concours, though. First, I think there are enough events as it is for the host clubs to orchestrate. Second, the concours simply has to come at the beginning of the Convention because of the Ed Cole competition--it's unfair to the competitors to make them rally, econorun and autocross their cars before the concours. If the car display was a different day, a lot of people would not bother coming until after the concours was competed. I think that would be would be a real pity. Third, I think that the concours may inspire some owners whose cars are in the car display. If you separate the events, I would expect participation it the concours to dwindle. Fourth, if we are to be inclusive as a club, these events should occur together. Finally, I would be surprised if all of the concours cars would cooperate in the car show event, so many people would lose their opportunity to see them.

My 2 cents.
