<VV> performance camshafts

Hey folks,

I currently have the drivetrain pulled out of my Corsa which is undergoing restification. (yes, I said restification not restoration). The car I have was previously set up for autocross by someone who seems to have done what he could to upgrade for that purpose. What I have found so far is that the car is equipped with Koni's on all four corners, has sport springs, four separate aircleaners, and finned aluminum valve covers and oil pan. I'm wondering how much was done that I cant see!

My first question is what is the easiest way (minimal disassembly etc.) I can find out if there is an aftermarket cam installed in the engine, and how aggressive a cam it is.

I would also appreciate info on what else I should check out and/or do to this engine while it is out of the car. It ran fine on the way home seventy miles(needs a tuneup certainly) but otherwise has not been driven for about 7 or so years. I know I will certainly check/do the pushrod tube seals.

Last, a question for the performance guru's. I would like to get the most power possible out of this engine, without making it impractical. I would like an aftermarket cam for a lopey idle sound (not extreme, but noticeable), and I want some good performance, but I am not willing to sacrifice too much reliability or fuel economy. It absolutely must run on pump gas, prefer 89 to 92 but will settle for premium if it will be worth it. I would not mind sacrificing a few miles per gallon, but I am not interested in being back close to 8city/13highway Premium like my 68 Vette' got!!!

Please recommend best performance mods as far as bang for the buck, and a lopey cam that wont make the car miserable to drive daily in the non-snowy months. I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as I can so keep that in mind.

Thanks!
