Hey Geoff,
When in doubt, change it out.  Many seals of all types
are like asbestos, no problem until you disturb them.
It might be untimely to get a new one, but look at
where it is,  what it can do if it fails after you
stick it back together, and how far you have to go if
it does.
As long as I was in there, I'd change every seal I
could reach--cheap insurance. Yousaid he is a
friend--even after the old seal fails?
