<VV> 67 4 door brake questions- rear brakes unadjust themselves

The rear brakes on our 67 are acting weird. The "emergency/parking/hand"
brake handle moves a full range and it is almost out of clicks to get the
car to not roll. OK, I had this happen before and replaced the rear shoes,
adjusted them and all was well, including the service brakes....for about
100 miles. Then, it seems like the rears get looser and looser and the
e-brake gets looser and looser. OK, I realized I had put that spring that
goes across the gap where the auto adjuster goes in backwards, so it was
pressed against the star wheel. Fixed both of those springs, adjusted the
shoes again and all was well....for about 100 miles. Back to square one.
About this time, the master cylinder developed a case of
"go-to-the-floor-itis". Replaced same. Bled everything. Thought: THat
oughta fix the problems. Yep. Sure did! for about 100 miles, back to soft
pedal and loose e-brake.

So, I think, maybe I put the adjusters in on the wrong side. Unlikely, as I
only do one side at a time, so I have the other to look at when I forget how
it goes back together, but....

Now - the big question is, how does one tell the adjusters apart? Or, even
bigger question, is there even a difference in them? This is really getting
to be a nuisance.

Brake people - you have the Conch.
