<VV> Tech question--pilot bushings

I have been rebuilding engines and replacing clutches for years. But each
time I removed the old pilot bushing and installed a new one , I did so without
actually INSPECTING the new bushing.

But this time I did, and got a surprise. The NOS GM bushing looks to be made
of solid bronze. The surface under a 20X loupe looks to have some
inperfections, BUT it sure is NOT made of sintered bronze as I understand sintering.
Sintering as I understand it, is the forcing of small balls of a material to
adhere together comprising a structure or object. This has no small balls of
material. And it is not porous either.

Several other NOS bushings are the same. It would look like it's nearly
impossible to force oil thru the bushing as has been described by others as a
method of oiling it. Also just soaking the bushing in oil will provide good
lubrication, but I can't see how the oil could posibly penetrate the bushing
proper.

What are the experiences of others? Does anyone have any bushings to check
out and compare with mine? Any thoughts or comments?

Regards,
Bob Helt
