<VV> 1968 monza cylinder head concerns

Hi Mark.

Hmm, could be weak springs, stuck/maladjusted lifter, or toasted valve
seat, or maybe a stuck valve... There is just no way to know unless you
do more testing. Try a leakdown or pressure test. If a leakdown test
shows a good seal, then your valves might be too loose or you have a
partially collapsed lifter. I have a similar problem but have the
culprit narrowed down.

I have an uneven cadence to my engine cranking and, after
reading an EXCELLENT tech article in the Communique (sorry, feeble old
mind forgets the issue and author) concerning blow-by, compression,
checking out an engine, etc. did a compression check. For the record I
have no blow-by but will spew a little smoke after idling for longer
than a minute. To complicate the diagnosis, I have a turbo that could
also be the source of oil smoke. I found my #4 40 lbs lower than the
rest. That sorta brings me to where you are.
I then took my compressor and, with #4 on it's compression
stroke, added 30lbs of regulated air to the cylinder. For comparison, I
did the same to #2. I could hear nothing from #2, but could hear
escaping air through the exhaust from #4. I removed the valve cover,
the rocker was correctly adjusted. I tapped the exhaust valve with a
rawhide mallet and could "make it better".

Subject: <VV> 1968 monza cylinder head concerns

As stated in a previous post, I adjusted my valves and found that #6
intake
rocker to be very wobbly and #4 intake slightly less wobbly. Tonight I
took
a compression test and it show 90 psi for cylinders 6, 4 and 2. The
right bank (cylinders 1,3,5) all showed 120 psi. My question is,
could weak intake springs cause this problem. Any one out there have
similar experiences or ideas for the next step. Thanks for your help

Mark
