It might be that simple evaporation of the fuel in the carb bowls would do  
it.  In the absence of an electric pump, he might loosen the bolt that  holds 
the stock fuel pump to the engine--but not remove it-- and pump the pump  up 
and down by hand to get fuel to the carbs.
