Smitty Says:  Doc what you are experiencing can be a weak fuel pump.  Don't be looking at the diaphragms though.  It will be a failing valve or in the rarest of occasions a failing return spring in the top of the pump.  Like the guys are saying, low float bowl level (for any reason) can cause the problem.  You mentioned Carb balance.  Not part of the equation.  Make sure the choke butterflys are closing all the way when the engine is "overnight cold".  They need to be in this weather.
